Domestic Hot Water systems for Smart Cities: challenges and solutions
Abstract:
Domestic hot water production takes a predominant role in the issue of energy conservation in buildings since modern buildings are well thermally insulated and require minimal room heating (s. passive house construction standards). Therefore, there is a need to rethink domestic hot water production, storage and distribution systems in smart cities. Energy saving thoughts generally motivate to reduce the temperature of domestic hot water or increase the use of low temperature heat sources (i.e heat pumps) what is not acceptable from a health point of view (proliferation of legionella or other bacteria).
The main aim of this course is providing an opportunity for students to gain insight in the requirements of high-efficiency but safe hot water systems and to learn more about new concepts for smart cities taking advantage of renewable energy sources. The focus will not only be set on energy issues but also on hygienic aspects. Newest research results and implementation examples will illustrate the theoretical contend.
