The concept of sustainability was officially announced in the late 1980s, through the World Commission on Environment and Development, and is now a leading concept recognized at the international level. Governments, NGOs and business are trying to implement principles of sustainable development in practice. The course is focused on the modern understanding of Sustainable Development, principles that underline sustainability and critics of the concept. Students will learn about social capital, Capability-Based Approach, community development and why GDP is not the best method to measure development. Also, different approaches to measure sustainability applied at national and local levels such as MDGs, HDI, and others will be discussed.  One of the lectures is devoted to the Chornobyl accident's effects on Ukraine and prospectives of sustainable development at the affected areas.
