The course consists in undertaking a “journey” through the basic features of the phenomenon of radioactivity (produced by natural or artificial sources), enabling the students to become enlightened to the concepts of ionizing radiation, radioactive materials, dose and exposure and to become more familiar to the many examples of this phenomenon accompanying mankind since its very early paces on the Earth. The journey will also touch briefly the latest recent achievements on the exploitation of the power of nuclear phenomena in the quest for a clean, safe and reliable source of energy alternative to fossil fuels-based ones and on how scientists, experimental physicists and engineers, are getting ready to design and construct innovative device to measure extreme high energy ionizing radiation with more and more innovative and sophisticated with the amazing machines in the post-LHC (large Hadron Collider) era.
