Introduction to Lean Manufacturing
Course duration: 8 h
We all know the bad news in developing countries on crisis. Loss of million manufacturing jobs, cuts and fights over health insurance, pensions and education. The best and robust economies have a strong relationship with a healthy and competitive industrial sector. Manufacturing matters because of its large out-of-state exports and its large multiplier effects from in-state purchasing; $1 from manufacturing sector creates $1.43 of other economic activity double that of services sector; it provides a ladder of economic opportunity for much of today’s working middle class; it is the leading contributor to the state and community tax base. The goal to reverse the economic situation is to keep high value added (sales- purchase) versus full time employee hours for manufacturing companies for big good and small good factories. Big factories have high salaries, high productivity and big and deep supply chains and small good firms smalls with high salaries, high productivity and good links to the rest of the economy. The strategy is clear; lean manufacturing helps objective companies to be more productive, have more customers and better salaries. Nevertheless we should not fail on just applying lean manufacturing techniques well known from Toyota production system. We must deploy the learning lean model that combines low-waste manufacturing practices (lean) with an involved, empowered, & prepared workforce focused on innovation, quality & organizational flexibility (learning).
