In many warehouses semimanufactured products are stored that need to undergo several independent operations before they are ready for sale. If holding costs of products are high, it is profitable for the manufacturer to keep the total time that a product spends in the production process as low as possible. When the holding costs differ among products and when the semimanufactures are delivered at different times at the warehouse, efficient procedures exist to minimize total holding costs. However, when the operations on one product can be interrupted in favour of another, there is no straightforward way to construct such a schedule.

Since 1979, it has remained an open question whether or not there exists an efficient way to solve this problem. We can see that the status of the problem is continuously updated.

In this presentation, I will outline a model that solves the problem in polynomial time. The model is based on a variation of the Assignment Problem and a well-known concept total dual integrality in combinatorial optimization.
