Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for a discount?

Having registered for the Summer School, every participant disregarding of nationality and affiliation is welcome to apply for a participation discount. Discount will be granted based on the reasons stated in the motivation letter, and on the academic merit and achievements.

Are there certificates issued at the end of the project and what are the conditions of receiving them?

Provided that the courses are successfully completed i.e. not less than 80% of lectures and seminars are attended and the participant behaves appropriately, the certificate of participation is granted at the end of the project. The courses give 3 ECTS-credits in the European system.

Do I need a language certificate to apply?

Participants should be fluent in English in order to follow lectures and discussions, but no language certificate is required.

How do I pay for the participation?

You are required to pay by bank transfer after you receive the acceptance letter and payment details. There is also a possibility to pay in cash directly to the Organizing Committee upon your arrival to Kyiv. PLEASE NOTE that if you need a confirmation (receipt) of your registration fee payment, you must pay by bank transfer. We are not able to provide you with a formal receipt if you pay in cash.

What currency exchange rate is applied when I’m paying for participation?

The exchange rate is the official rate of National Bank of Ukraine on the day of payment. Please note: if you want to pay in cash, you are required to pay in Euro (unless you have agreed upon another option with the Organizing Committee)

Can I choose my roommate? How many people are there in one room?

Yes, you can mention your preferences while filling in the registration form. The maximum number of people in one room is 4. Nevertheless, we always do our best to accommodate all participants with maximum comfort and not to pack the rooms at full.

Where is the Polytechnic Institute campus located? Is it far from the center?

The KPI campus is located near the subway station “Politekhnichnyi Instytut”, it is 15 min by subway or 20 min by bus from the city center. You can easily reach the city center by public transport or even by foot.

When will the exact schedule be available?

The exact Summer School schedule will be available one week before the School starts. You can check the draft schedule here.

Can I arrive later (after the Opening)/leave earlier/later before/after the Summer School ends?

Yes, it is possible to arrive 1-2 days earlier, but please note that we may not accommodate you if you don’t inform us about your arrival in advance. Also, every extra night in a hostel should be paid separately.

It is also possible to arrive later, after the Summer School Opening in certain cases (you must agree upon it with the organizers separately). The same works for the earlier departure.

Departure is required to be scheduled on departure day (August 18). If for some reasons you fail to depart this day, extra nights in the hostel should be paid additionally. We are not able to accommodate you for more than 2 days after August 16.

Can I be absent from the classes for 1-2 days due to personal reasons?

Yes, in case of exigent circumstances, you are allowed to be absent from the classes for maximum 1-2 days. It is advisable to choose the free days for absence, though.

Can I order lunches or meals later or opt out of getting them?

Yes, it is possible to change your meals arrangement upon arrival, if needed.

How is my attendance recorded and is it obligatory to inform about my presence beforehand?

Your attendance is being checked by the stream coordinator and every missed lecture is recorded. Your certificate states the lectures and hours of attendance, thus if you are willing to obtain the certificate and ECTS, you are required to keep your attendance high. Nevertheless, in certain circumstances, a participant can miss a class if the stream coordinator is aware of his/her absence beforehand.

Is the Social Program obligatory?

The Summer School Social Program is not obligatory, but strongly recommended to attend. If you don’t attend social events, it doesn’t effect your certificate in any way.

I received my participation confirmation, but didn’t get any information about the payment, what should I do?

The payment details are sent to you later, after you have received acceptance letter and have confirmed your participation. If you didn’t receive the payment details and you have been accepted, contact the organizing committee.

Will someone pick me up (meet me) at the airport?

Yes, you will be met at the airport by a member of the Organizing Committee holding a sign “AACIMP-2015”. You will be assisted on your way from the airport to the school venue. You are required to send us your travel arrangements beforehand for us to send a person to meet you.

Do I need to bring my laptop for the classes?

It depends on a stream you have applied for. For Applied Computer Science and Neuroscience streams it is highly recommended to bring a laptop with you. Although there will be desktops for participants, you might use your personal laptop.

For other streams, personal laptops are not required, but you can bring them for your personal needs. There is a free Wi-Fi area in all study rooms. Furthermore, slides of the lectures will be uploaded on the website day to day, so it would be easier for you to follow the entire program.

Do I need a visa to enter Ukraine? What should I do in this case?

Some countries need to obtain a visa to enter Ukraine. You can check the full list of the countries, which have Visa-free Movement Regime with Ukraine on this website. If you need to obtain a visa, you have to provide your passport data in the application form or send them directly to our email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Invitation will be issued and the original will be sent to your postal address provided in the application.

What happens at the Summer School?

This summer we offer four streams in the program, covering the most intriguing and contemporary academic fields - Operational Research, Applied Computer Science, Neuroscience and Energy. In Kiev, an ancient city known for design, technology and a vibrant cultural life, you will discover the perfect environment for studying, making new friends and having fun! Apart from the educational program, exciting leisure activities such as excursions, quests, cinema club and parties are prepared for the participants. What language is used at the Summer School?

All summer school lectures and activities are held in English.

Is financial support available for the Summer School?

Every participant disregarding of nationality and affiliation is welcome to apply for a participation discount. More information you can find on Discounts & Scholarships page.

What criteria are used for selecting students?

Our courses are aimed at advanced Bachelor's degree, Master's degree and PhD students, young scientists and professionals under 35. Please, mind, that the applicants should have completed at least two years of university studies to participate in the project. Since all the courses AACIMP are taught in English, students are advised to be fluent in English in order to follow the material given and participate in discussions arising while studying process. How do I prepare for the Summer School?

Some streams need mastering in specific programs or knowledge in a certain area. Then, the information is sent on mail with a list of what you have to know, or a survey among participants is held. If it turns out that most of them are not masters of programs needed, they will have an introductory lecture. 

What happens if I send the form more than once?

All registration forms are skimmed so you must not worry if, by accident, you have filled in a registration form twice. With a help of the records we will find out that it is the same person, so these two registration forms will be considered as one.

I would like to change my registration. What should I do?

Can I earn ECTS credits from the Summer School?

The participants of this school are given 3 credits + 3 additional credits for the poster session.
